I suppose it’s a comfort, perhaps a sense of self-control, doing worse damage to yourself than the world will ever dare inflict.

Almost everyday you fall
upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me
to rise
And through the window in the wall
come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning.

And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky…

Crucifix
Alec Goss, 2013.

The crucifix is a strong loaded icon and can be seen from a Cathedral alter to a cozy little home. It represents redemption, salvation, death, and power. By using computerized media such as the digital prints and hands on material such as hardwood, a juxtaposition of identities and definition is created and questions such as technology’s control over one’s life, the icon, and popular culture’s factor into how one views the world come into play.
The crucifix shape is taken to an ambiguity. From this indirect reference to a cross, one can discern different narratives from the piece. In relation to biblical mythology, much symbolism is used to allude to inquiries and important aspects of our digital culture as well as themes of ethics and religion. The “X” represents censorship, death, and the past. In contrast, the apple alludes to many things such as knowledge, new life, the origin of sin, and simply Apple technology.
The Christ figure if we should even call it so, is contorted and disfigured. Expressing more emotion through color and shape rather than detailed illustration, but this is done by a digital aesthetic. It combines the digital and the natural shape of a human body and “mashes” them up to form a mangled mass of Human, allegory, and technical hybrid.
From the crudeness of the wood and the distorted digital image of an apple, this piece brings up questions of power, what is right, notions of the future, reflections of our own culture, and the could be tyranny or positive upbringing of a new digital age.
